Defender Hjulmand signed with Herlev IF in the winter of 1992 after spending the first four years of his career at Randers Freja. He spent two seasons playing for Herlev IF before transferring to B.93 in the 1995 winter. In 1994, he also played for the North Florida Ospreys, making 18 games and tallying six goals. Hjulmand was forced to retire from football at the age of 26 after three seasons with B93 due to a knee injury. When Ge Hareide’s contract expired following the UEFA Euro 2020 competition, it was confirmed in June 2019 that Hjulmand would succeed Hareide as manager of the Denmark national football team. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Euro 2020 event was postponed, hence Hareide did not captain the team. He guided Denmark to the semifinals of the Euro 2020, where they fell to England 2-1 after extra time and a contentious penalty.
